If you saw what lived on your surfaces under a microscope, your skin might crawl: Teeny tiny bacteria and microbes consisting of viruses, soil, fungi, bacteria, animal dander, pollen, sweat, excretions and skin cells all invade your spaces on a regular basis.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WIPE DOWN THE BATHROOM?
Once a week at least. Dr. Jason Tetro, a microbiologist and expert in the field of infectious diseases, says your bathroom is the ultimate bacteria host; E.coli can be found within six feet of the toilet and in the sink. To keep it at bay, disinfect the toilet and sink at least once weekly, and the bathtub every two weeks — more if you shower often.
Tips to Reduce or Eliminate the Spread of Faeces Bacteria in the Bathroom!
Close the Tolilet Lid Before Flushing: One of the most effective ways to minimize the spread of bacteria and viruses such as E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Campylobacter, is to always close the toilet lid before you flush. Flushing with the lid up can create an aerosol effect, sending tiny droplets containing bacteria and viruses into the air, potentially contaminating nearby surfaces. By simply making sure the lid is closed, you can reduce this risk by as 50%.
Regularly Clean High-Touch Surfaces: At least once per week, cleaning and disinfecting counter-tops, sinks, and door knobs will help prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. Since the bathroom is normally the wettest area of the home, wiping down these surfaces will also prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SWAP OUT TOWELS?
The frequency of towel changes depends on the type of towel and the room it's used in. Bath towels, in particular, can become loaded with bacteria, including staph and fecal matter, especially if they don't fully dry between uses. This is why cleaning expert Laura Dellutri recommends swapping out bath towels every other day. Damp towels create the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive, and even fungi that cause dandruff can grow in them.
In the kitchen, towels are exposed to bacteria every time you handle food or wash your hands. To maintain hygiene, be sure to regularly swap out your kitchen towels as well, depending on use.
